African Grasslands exhibit
Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is undergoing big changes. After two years of construction, the new African Grasslands exhibit opened on Memorial Day weekend. It will span more than 28 acres, and include many animal demonstration areas and fun activities for kids.
The new exhibit is part of the zoo’s 2010 master plan, which aims to place animals in natural surroundings. The zoo is working to place elephants, cheetahs, lions, plains zebras, and other animals by geographic region.
African Grasslands is the largest project in the zoo’s history. Twenty-five buildings are being constructed. They will house a variety of species, including a herd of elephants, a lion’s pride, a cheetah exhibit, a wildlife management headquarters, a kopjes exhibit, a sable antelope exhibit, and an overnight safari experience.
African Grasslands is being built on the southeastern side of the zoo. Throughout the building, guests will be able to see the animals up close and learn about their lives in the wild.
